A wonderful Barrie family recently opened their hearts and home to Bear, a cat that was in need of care. Unfortunately, they are not in a financial position to give Bear the full medical attention that he needs.
We don’t know much about Bear’s original owners, except that they only took Bear to the vet twice: once when he was neutered and vaccinated and, the second time, to update his vaccines. That was last year. Bear was then posted on London Marketplace.
His second owners were young people just starting off in life who saw the ad for Bear; he sounded like a dream cat, AND he was neutered and, supposedly, healthy. They adopted him as they didn’t want to see him homeless.
Bear immediately filled their home with joy and love. He just wanted to cuddle with them non-stop. However, he didn’t use his litter box. Sometimes this happens when a cat is in a new, strange environment, so the couple attributed it to his needing to adjust to their home. This continued, however, and a month after taking him, they noticed that Bear had blood in his urine.
The couple immediately took him to their vet who advised them that Bear had a urinary blockage that necessitated surgery asap. This was devastating news because they absolutely loved Bear but didn't have the money to pay that kind of vet bill. That is when the couple reached out to the Barrie family who they knew were animal lovers. The Barrie family agreed to take Bear and see if they could get him the help that he needed. The following week, the owners brought Bear to Barrie.
A few days after his arrival, blood was once again found in Bear’s urine. The family took him to their vet to find out that Bear had a condition called cystitis. Cystitis is a general term referring to inflammation in the urinary bladder. It can be very painful and can lead to a blockage. It can also lead to a cat urinating outside of his litter box.
The family were given meds to help Bear with the pain, plus he was also put on a urinary diet. As soon as Bear started his meds and the problem specific food, it was obvious he was feeling better, and he started using his litter box again – regularly. What a good boy!
Perhaps Bear was urinating outside his litter box in his initial home, and that is why he was put on Marketplace. We will never know. Bear could have been uncomfortable and in pain for years. All we are sure about is that this cuddler deserves to have his painful condition rectified with surgery.
The family made the difficult decision to surrender Bear to Feline Fix. The vet gave them three choices: to keep him on meds and specialized food for his entire life (not fun for Bear and expensive), to have him undergo surgery to prevent further urination issues (expensive), or to euthanize Bear (out of the question). Because the family already had two pets, they didn’t feel the first two options could be considered, and he was too sweet and young a cat to even consider the final option.
When the family surrendered Bear to Feline Fix, they had him checked at the vet. During the examination, our vet noticed a problem with his hip. X-rays were taken, and it turned out that Bear has a fractured broken hip. The vet felt that his urination problems could be a result of being unable to position himself properly to urinate, given the pain in his hip.
The Metacam that Bear is now taking has helped manage his pain, but, even before that, the Barrie family said that Bear was the sweetest cat ever. From the day he entered their home, Bear has loved everyone he has met and has always been willing to give someone a bear hug. Bear is also good with other cats once he gets to know them and is open to dogs. He spends most of the day lazing around and has just recently begun playing with cat wands, something he wouldn't do before being on his meds. He only plays with his front paws, though; he doesn’t do any jumping or lunging forward. Bear’s favorite pastime, however, is cuddling with anyone who is willing to cuddle with him.
After learning Bear’s story and the suffering, he has undergone, don’t you agree that this boy deserves a new lease on life? His surgery is quoted at $2000.
